Thoughts on Video Game Movies

Video game movies tend to have a poor reputation, due to either the fact that the self-insert interactive nature of video games doesn't always translate well to a linear third-person narrative, or that they get the goofy "big budget Hollywood treatment", where things are changed to the point of being almost unrecognizable. I fell like I haven't actually watched a lot of these, but I thought it would be fun to briefly write about the ones I recall: The 80s Super Mario Bros Movie: This one is definitely a classic example of "big budget goofy Hollywood" treatment. They changed so much that there is little left of the Mario world beyond character names and vague visual similarities. Despite this, I recall enjoying the film as a kid and teenager - I liked all the weird sci-fi stuff and gross looking fungus effects. But, to be fair, I haven't watched it since I was a teenager, so it's hard to say if I would enjoy it now. - Sonic The Movi...

Dear Esther (PC) Review

“A Very interesting, haunting title. I think it could have been improved by a more interactive world, but the narrative is wonderful and the atmosphere is fantastic. It strongly captures the feel of being lost, dirty and alone. The use of words, sound and visuals made me able to easily imagine the sand in in my shoes, and the harsh salty ocean winds against my dry, tired skin. The ambiguous ending is also very clever, which I can interpret in at-least 3 different ways.” -My original review from 2013 2023 Thoughts: My memory of this game (more of a interactive visual novel as there is no win/loss condition) is kind of like a fever dream because I remember playing it after having an anxiety attack when i was spending a weekend alone in my parents house. It helped me calm down, because while it is very melancholy in tone, it's also quite beautiful and peaceful. It's very slow-paced so it's best for folks who love to take their time and explore the world around...

My .ST.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow Of Chernobyl screenshots

Wanted to upload some screenshots I took during my play-through of S.TA.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl. Notable images: -two stalkers getting cuddly by a campfire! Aww :) - a flying Snork?! - “Gordon’s PDA” which talks about Mesa and a crowbar…hmm…sounds familiar.

Eversion (PC) Recommendation

Eversion takes the fun typical 8/16-bit sidescroller idea and turns it on its side, with unsettling surprises and rather creepy environments. As a lover of both bright colored 16-bit games, and creepy weirdness, I personally recommend this unique little title. - My original steam review from 2010 This one I revised way too prematurely, because I never even beat this game! just played it for an afternoon at a friends house. So, rather than calling this a review, I'm calling it a recommendation. I'm not sure when the first creepypasta rom hack came out, but this game is kind of like one of those. I've made a point of only showing a screenshot of when things look normal, so as not to spoil what happens when things get creepy in this one. From what I did play of it, it was pretty hard, but also cool and spooky, so I definitely would like to go back and finish it one day.

Unreal Tournament 3 (PC) Review

"UT3 is a blast! There may not be as much custom content available as for it's predecessor (ut2004), but it's got the same ol' fun action-packed game-play and lots of eye candy to boot. The hoverboards and other new vehicles add lots of fun to already satisfying game-play." - My original steam review from 2011 2023 Thoughts: It was indeed a blast! I didn't spend as much time with this one as UT2004, because there wasn't anywhere near as big of a modding community for the game, but it's still a solid entry in the Unreal series. The story campaign was fun to play through, having a story-line based more around a war with the Necris, and lots of cut scenes, as well. It had a nice mechanic where you could occasionally use a "card" (or something, it's been a long time) to skip a mission if it was getting too frustrating, which helped me out a few times. The graphical upgrade to the game is really cool and slick looking, and blew ...
